On March 15, 1882, George Weeks filed for township.
Weeks wanted to call the town Almira, after his wife, but
there was already a town in Missouri bearing that name.
Weeks decided on the name Eldon, after an English duke.
A month later the Jefferson City, Lebanon and Southwest 
Railroad, which was later known as the Missouri Pacific
Bagnell Branch, decided to build through the area.
Originally the town of Eldon was bounded on the north by
North Street, Fifteenth Street on the south, Walnut Street
on the West and on the east by Mill Street. The city of
Eldon has been viewed as a gateway to the Lake of the
Ozarks because of its location on Highway 54.
